  Rhythm Magic:

Rhythm Magic Educational & Student Assembly Programs

Join the magic of Michael Bayard's inspiring interactive and hands-on assemblies demonstrating percussion instruments from Africa, Mexico, South America, Asia, Europe, and the U.S.A. In just one session your students will learn confidence, courage, and concentration, while discovering the basics of music notation and performance. Students of all ages will be given opportunities to actually play ethnic instruments and become part of an ensemble. Based on Mr. Bayard's symphony and world music expertise, this ensemble setting will encourage harmony and teamwork.

Rhythm Magic is much more than a lecture on music. It is an understanding and appreciation of the uniqueness, the diversity, and the complexity of multi-cultural peoples and the art from a global musical perspective. Michael Bayard's method of teaching is by example-without preaching. Yet his message is unmistakably clear: through music anyone can develop skills to express themselves with positive direction and purpose.

With just one period of fun, laughter, and intense musical performance and inter-action, Michael Bayard will inspire your students to admire and appreciate music from a world perspective, to study a musical instrument, or to practice harder if they are already musicians.

For Michael Bayard, "percussion is a way of life." Self-esteem through music is his way of encouraging youth to look to a future of hope, purpose, and direction.

Michael Bayard's Rhythm Magic is a dynamic program based on three principles that explore a multi-cultural legacy:
  1. demonstration
  2. interactive dialogue with students
  3. hands-on participation
and concludes with a brilliant improvisation.

The presentation itself expands over a three-part design:

  1. Rhythm: "Our World is on a Pulse"
Starting from a simple heart beat, taken at the moment, Mr. Bayard establishes a basic beat and tempo and builds a tapestry of rhythmic complexity-with decidedly rock and roll overtones.
  2. Percussion: "A World of Color"
Mr. Bayard explores, explains, and displays the different colors (timbres) common within the percussion ensemble.
  3. Percussion Ensemble: "A World in Harmony"
Students are asked to join Mr. Bayard in a hands-on-demonstration. Students come up one by one, and each is taught a short rhythmic phrase on a percussion instrument. Eventually an entire ensemble evolves, with the students respecting each other, supporting each other, and working as a team.
